Our ancestors not going that far ago, just about 10,000 years ago! They hunted and gathered food. Their goal was to eat high calorie foods to assist them in famine and long winter. Hence, they worked hard to gather those foods. Although, it was high in calorie they still burnt enormous amount of energy to gather it. Unlike, recent world, where we just pick our car and drive to the super market and choose from best selection of high calorie foods.
